QUICK WHAT THIS BIRD MEAN

The bird symbolises how Shiori has power over Juri, notice how it flies above Juri’s head, indicating Shiori’s position over Juri and her influence over her, which is also reflected in the way Shiori is always standing above Juri before this point

Once Shiori notices that Juri doesn’t seem particularly upset about their past when they talk on the balcony, the bird flies into the building and falls to the floor.

Once Juri says that she never even liked the boy Shiori thought she stole from her, Shiori realizes that she has no power over Juri at all, and the bird dies.

Furthermore, in Juri’s memories of their past, the color is black & white and the only color is the orange rose. The bird is similarly colored black and white, with an orange beak.

SHIT SON THIS BIRD WAS ONLY IN THIS EPISODE FOR LIKE 5 SECONDS AND YOU CAN WRITE HALF A PAGE ON IT

I think this official artwork is ridiculously good at summing up the secondary relationships in Utena. For starters we have Kozue, disconnected to anyone else in the picture because she is really on the outside of their dynamics, focusing completely on her brother despite their opposing viewpoints. Miki’s eyes are closed, as he does not want to see the true Kozue; he has idealized but ultimately failed to understand her. The hands she has on his head are tender but also possessive and manipulative.

Miki’s close to Juri but not intimately so, which is appropriate since they’re often together as friends. Like Miki, Juri’s eyes are also closed; she too is blinded, this time in regards to Shiori. She cuts an independent figure in the midst of them, but she refuses to sever her connection to Shiori; who, meanwhile, is intent on Touga, but his controlling hand on the back of her neck hints at how he uses her as a tool. She can be replaced with any of the girls at Ohtori he picks up and discards.

His other hand is hidden in his pocket, showing that he has his own agenda despite how well he is able to deceive Shiori with his attention. And Saionji, like Kozue, is disconnected from the others because his goals are always focused on one person. There is longing in his posture but anger in his expression, neatly showcasing how he feels toward Touga.

thats how you break it down. I never would have thought of it like this. I love the symbolism in Utena, and analyzing it even more

And why can’t you just hold me?

such an emotive scene

Rewatching Utena now 5 years later- it all makes sense

My opinion on certain characters have changed and re-watching it also reminds me of why Utena will forever be one of my favorite anime/work of art) series of all time. Re-watching it now, I absolutely love juri, and ruka and nanami, whereas I didn’t really care for them before. My opinion of shiori is still the same, but I now somewhat feel for her character, I now am mature enough to understand her reasons for why she does what she does. I find her relationship with juri both heart-wrenching and intriguing in it’s own twisted way.. I still love Utena and anthy even more. I love the story the beautiful art-that heavily inspires mine and the characters.

Kunihiko Ikuhara is surreal genius!

I just really love this scene from Utena honestly

Man I hated Shiori… however I really love this image….
