such a profound series with many powerful messages

tofixtheshadows:

I think this official artwork is ridiculously good at summing up the secondary relationships in Utena. For starters we have Kozue, disconnected to anyone else in the picture because she is really on the outside of their dynamics, focusing completely on her brother despite their opposing viewpoints. Miki’s eyes are closed, as he does not want to see the true Kozue; he has idealized but ultimately failed to understand her. The hands she has on his head are tender but also possessive and manipulative.

Miki’s close to Juri but not intimately so, which is appropriate since they’re often together as friends. Like Miki, Juri’s eyes are also closed; she too is blinded, this time in regards to Shiori. She cuts an independent figure in the midst of them, but she refuses to sever her connection to Shiori; who, meanwhile, is intent on Touga, but his controlling hand on the back of her neck hints at how he uses her as a tool. She can be replaced with any of the girls at Ohtori he picks up and discards.

His other hand is hidden in his pocket, showing that he has his own agenda despite how well he is able to deceive Shiori with his attention. And Saionji, like Kozue, is disconnected from the others because his goals are always focused on one person. There is longing in his posture but anger in his expression, neatly showcasing how he feels toward Touga.

thats how you break it down. I never would have thought of it like this. I love the symbolism in Utena, and analyzing it even more

A few days ago while re-watching Revolutionary Girl Utena, I ran across a interesting quote-

” No matter how you may be abused, you’re always happpy to be near the one you love..” -Saionji

I think this pretty much rings true in the case of Xanxus & Squalo*
